I am of Sephardic origin and thank G-d I can speak both hebrew and some german among other languages but it is frustrating when rabbis use yiddish and other non yiddish speakers cannot understand Reply

My grandparents spoke Yiddish. When I was a little kid, spent quite a bit of time with them. They always spoke Yiddish when they didn’t want the children to understand what they were saying. So, I picked up some Yiddish.
I can fashtay a lot of the Yiddish that my Rabbi uses. His first language is Hebrew.
When he speaks to many members of the congregation who are Israelis in Hebrew, I’m lost.
So, I can completely understand what you are saying.
In addition, we have a lot of members whose first language is Spanish. So, it’s like the UN when each group stops speaking English and reverts to their mother tongue.
I actually enjoy it when Rabbi speaks the mammalochen. Reply

I agree that there is room for all tongues.
As an Ashkenazic Jew, I grew up with Yiddish spoken around the house.
As for me, Mamalushin (The mother tongue) or Yiddish is the language of the Diaspora.
I live in Israel now and although Modern Hebrew is the language of the land when I pray, my Ashkenazic roots return.
Thank G-d for Chabad, where Yiddishkeit still exists!
